各位同學, 你知道 "think" 的過去式 (Simple past tense) 是什麼嗎?

我有一些學生,誤把"thank"當作"think"的過去式, 這當然大錯特錯! 難道 "thank you" 是過去式嗎?!

其實,在所有不規則動詞 (Irregular verbs) 中只有5個動詞的過去式以 -ought 為尾,只有牢牢記住便不會再用錯了!

buy -> bought
bring -> brought
think -> thought
fight -> fought
seek -> sought

10, 000 and 100, 000

中國人常不懂得用英語讀 10,000 (一萬), 因為中國有萬位,但"萬"卻沒有相對的英語。

其實要破解這讀法很簡單, 只要記著 "千 (thousand) = 000" 便可!

one 1,000 thousand
ten 10,000 thousand
one hundred 100,000 thousand

因此:
(一千) 1,000 = one thousand
(一萬) 10,000 = ten thousand
(十萬) 100,000 = one hundred thousand

不過, 1,000,000 並非 "one thousand thousand", 而是 "one million" ,
因為 "百萬 (million) = 000 000"!

相信很多同學都聽過 "Let's do it!" 這句話, 究竟當中的 "Let's" 指什麼?

"Let's" 是指 "Let us", 即"讓我們"。
順帶一提, "Let's"/"Let" 後面只可用 bare infinitive (即動詞的原形), 所以:
我們只可說 "Let's go home.", 而非 "Let's goes/went home."。
